Jailbreak for 3.1 firmware! "fun!" - Not for 3GS or iPod Touch 2G.. Sorry

[Via the Dev-Team Blog]

This is the low down on our tools for use with the 3.1 firmware from Apple, please read the whole post in full before attempting anything. Because of changes with Apple’s update techniques (that complicate the 3GS upgrade process) this will be a multipart release. This release starts with PwnageTool 3.1 for Mac OS X - this application supports the iPhone 1st Generation (2G), the iPhone 3G and the iPod touch 1G. NB: THIS DOES NOT SUPPORT THE 3GS OR 2G/3G IPOD TOUCH. redsn0w for Mac OS X and Windows will follow sometime in the near future, please don’t bug us about it - we’ll release when we have something ready.

Google Voice notifications on your Computer - and iPhone

Computer

You can get notifications for Voicemail and Text (SMS) Messages on your computer when they are received on your Google Voice account!
To achieve this we will use Growl for Windows, FireFox, FireFox Growl/GNTP Add-On, and FireFox Greasemonkey Add-On.

Downloads:
Growl for Windows
FireFox
Greasemonkey Add-On
Growl/GNTP Add-On

Once Growl is installed I recommend running it at login (Option in Growl)

You will need to install FireFox (if you dont have it already) before install the Add-Ons.

Once you have those installed you will need to go here and install the Google Voice Greasemonkey Script by clicking Install near the upper right corner.

Now that you have done that go to the Google Voice webpage - here

It should say Google Voice is registered to receive Growl Notifications.

You will now receive notifications of new Google Voice alerts! The only problem being here is that I believe you need to keep FireFox OPEN with your Google Voice account open in a Window or Tab. But either way this is very useful! I use it myself.

iPhone

You will need to get an App from the AppStore called Prowl: Growl for iPhone. It does cost but only $2.99. If you want to get it by other methods thats fine but I will not give any links to other methods

Open Prowl and register a new account. Once registered visit this address on your computer https://prowl.weks.net/ and log in with the account you created. Press the button to create an API key. Now copy that key. Or save it somehow

You will need to open Growl on your computer and go to the Network tab and click "Forward notifications to other computers"
Now click the Plus button (green) and choose iPhone and choose a name for your device.
Now paste in the API key you got from Prowl.

Now thats it! You get Google Voice notifications on your Computer and your iPhone! - Only thing I dislike is the need to keep Google Voice and FireFox open.. But for most of the day that isnt a problem for me and probably for more people it wont be a problem for some of the day.

Enjoy!

GPush - Gmail Push For iPhone!

Finally! Gmail Push for the iPhone!.. Well.. Kind of.. This is about as good as you will get as of right now for simplicity, there are other ways of achieving the same goal (Getting Gmail to push on the iPhone) but this looks to be the easiest for most users, since it is an AppStore app then it will be easily accessible to ALL iPhone users. There are other ways such as using services and setting up exchange accounts. Personally for ME if I turn Fetch on set for 1 hour (or whenever.. Supreme Preferences allows more options so I use 6 hours) it will Push new emails to my iPhone anyway! I have absolutely NO idea why or how but it works! I have tested it by sending myself emails and having others send them but it works. Anyways back to GPush

This app will give you Push notifications for your Gmail account!

Here is the site for the App itself - http://www.tiveriasapps.com/ourapps.php

Copied from the Tiverias Apps website:

GPush

GPush is the missing link between GMail and the iPhone. For the first time, receive instant Gmail message notifications on the iPhone. For best results, place the GPush app icon above your mail icon - this will allow you to quickly open your mail app if new messages come in through GPush.

BlackBerry became very popular, in part because it offers remote users "instant" e-mail; new e-mails appear on the device as soon as they arrive, without the need for any user intervention, in what is referred to as "push email". For the first time, using GPush, iPhone users will be able to receive their GMail new message notification instantly and no longer have to wait up to an hour to be notified of new email. Push email has the added value of reducing battery consumption considerably. GPush even lets the iPhone user choose how to be notified of new email. Your options include having the phone vibrate, ring, display the email message on the standby screen just like an SMS, or simply have the GPush icon show how many new messages are unread.

features:

  • Instantly receive Gmail new message notifications on the iPhone
  • Set it and Forget it: All you have to do is download the app and decide how you want to be notified of new email. You never have to open the app again after that.
  • Improved battery life: GPush uses less battery since it relies on push notifications rather than data fetching ("pulling")
  • Ability to see emails on the standby screen just like text messages
  • SSL Security Certificate used to ensure password security for GPush users

My Favorite iPhone/iPod Touch Applications

My Top List of iPhone/iPod Touch Applications!

My top 5 Applications for iPhone/iPod Touch in no particular order ;)

-- These will only be Applications from the official iTunes App Store --- I will do my favorite Apps for a Jailbroken iPhone/iPod Touch in another post!

BeeJiveIM - Amazing IM program for the iPhone. It is a bit pricey but if you can spare the money it is worth it! Full landscape, SMS features, IM Push and so much more! Deifnitely worth it - http://www.linktoapp.com/BeeJiveIM
Lightsaber - This is more of just an entertaining App. It has no real purpose besides making Lightsaber noises when you swing your iPhone! It includes the ability to customize your lightsaber and your character and even write your own bio! Very fun! - http://www.linktoapp.com/Lightsaber Unleased
Flutter - Simple yet effective. This Application allows you to send Picture Mail to any cellular device! It does not actually send it as an SMS, it uploads your picture to there server then sends a link to the recipient which then allows them to download the picture to there phone, not the best solution but an alright one for now. Apple needs to give us REAL MMS!!! - http://linktoapp.com/Flutter
Topple - This is a very fun little game for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Stack your pieces and try and reach the top, but dont let it become off balance or it will fall! It is sensetive to your accelorameter as well. - http://linktoapp.com/Topple
Twitterrific - View posts, post replies, create new posts, and much more! With this free Application for the iPhone/iPod Touch you can do everything on your Twitter account and then some! I use this App quite a lot and recently got Twitterific Premium. - http://linktoapp.com/Twitterrific

Alright thats it for my 5 fav's! I will update with more Apps very soon.
